Understanding Racism: Foundations for School Staff

This course is offered exclusively to staff serving schools in the Greater Capital Region. Enrollment is rolling, so registration access remains open after the start date.

This fifteen-hour, asynchronous, self-paced course invites school staff to consider racism and how "this complex system of biases and structural inequities is at play” in our current context (New York State Education Department). Over ten sessions, you will explore topics including personal and racial identity; allyship; and microaggressions. Each week offers a choice of resources; reflection or action activities, so you can tailor your learning to your own context and interests.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Define key equity concepts aligned with the NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework

  • Examine your own identities and assumptions

  • Analyze how privilege and systemic racism can shape opportunities and outcomes for students

  • Practice strategies for responding to microaggressions, engaging in courageous conversations about race, and acting as an ally
