Using Literature to Build Literacy and Social-Emotional Learning (ACARC)
Discover how ELA teachers and school counselors can collaborate to use novels to address both English Language Arts standards and school counseling competencies. This event with Carla Young will highlight specific texts and practical strategies for drawing out social-emotional learning themes. Leave ready-to-use strategies that help students make meaningful connections between literature and their own lives.
With more than two decades of experience as a school counselor, Carla Young enjoys helping educators find practical ways to support students' academic, social, and emotional growth. She was honored as the 2019 Beautiful Me Teacher of the Year and the 2023 New York State School Counselor of the Year. In addition to her work in schools, Carla shares her experience as an Adjunct Professor at Russell Sage College, a presenter at state and national conferences, and a consultant for school districts across New York. She appreciates opportunities to collaborate with educators and share practical strategies that can be applied immediately in schools.
