Portrait in Practice: Building Critical Thinkers and Reflective, Future-Focused Learners
Teachers across every discipline are being asked to prepare students to demonstrate proficiency in the New York State Portrait of a Graduate (POG). The framework is clear about what graduates should be able to do - but far less clear about how to apply the framework to individual disciplines that build those capacities inside ordinary instruction.
This course offers a concrete, transferable answer: Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a facilitated inquiry routine built on three questions and three facilitation moves. VTS is small enough to learn in a few hours, flexible enough to run in any classroom, and connects three POG components for your students - Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, and Reflective and Future Focused Learners. Through four online sessions, participants will collaborate to learn the POG and VTS frameworks, experience an example using The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, and translate the routine into their own discipline.
