Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers
In this 15-hour asynchronous course, participants will explore Louisa Cook Moats' book Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers. It addresses a key need in teacher preparation by helping K-12 educators understand how language works-an essential foundation for effective structured literacy instruction.
Based on the research of Louisa Cook Moats, it provides clear, practical guidance on topics such as:
The history of English and its impact on spelling
Speech sounds and English phonology
How spoken language connects to written print
Word structure (morphology)
Sentence structure (syntax)
How language conveys meaning
Through case studies, interactive activities, and analysis of real student work, participants learn effective strategies to support diverse learners. The course is designed for both preservice and in-service teachers and prepares educators to support reading and language development for all students.
