AI Thought Leaders: Centering Our Creative Voices
Generative artificial intelligence is changing what is possible in arts classrooms, raising difficult questions about what it means for students to "create." We know that AI can generate an image, song, essay, or graphic in seconds, but when students use AI to produce their creative work, a polished product may no longer reflect their own thinking, judgment, or creative voice.
This course takes a different approach from AI courses focused primarily on saving time, generating materials, or mastering a collection of tools. Instead, you will explore how AI can serve as a thinking partner while protecting the creative decisions that make students' work genuinely their own. You will experience this approach yourself, examine difficult questions about AI and creativity, and learn a practical diagnostic tool, the Decision Point Framework, for analyzing and redesigning classroom tasks. Most importantly, you will apply the framework to a task from your own practice. By the end of the course, you will have a classroom-ready assignment redesigned to allow AI use while making students' creative thinking and decision-making visible.
This is not a course about using AI to write lesson plans or generate rubrics or classroom materials with a click; instead, this course asks you to consider:
• Where does meaningful creative decision-making happen in an arts assignment?
• What happens when AI begins making those decisions for students?
• How can an assignment allow AI while still requiring students to exercise meaningful artistic judgment?
• How can we make that judgment visible in students' work?
The goal is not to decide whether AI is "good" or "bad" for arts education. The goal is to develop a way of designing learning experiences in which AI does not quietly replace the creative thinking we most want students to develop.
