Patriots of Hudson in the Revolutionary War

Patriots of Hudson in the Revolutionary War, an exhibit at the Hudson Area Library on view through June 30 (which will be online after the exhibit closes on Hudson River Valley Heritage's website hrvh.org) offers a unique opportunity to learn about the connection of the founders and early leaders of the City of Hudson with the Founding Fathers and key events and influences in the Revolutionary War. Many of the people who came to found Hudson were sea merchants and whaling captains and engaged in the privateering that helped the colonies succeed against the greatest naval power ever in the world. Some also became couriers who brought crucial messages from the French government to the Founding Fathers and some, successful merchants, loaned money to the Continental government and finally others fought in crucial battles during the war. We highlight these individuals, their service, their life in Hudson and even the accomplishments of their descendants. We also show how they illustrate the conflicts around freedom and enslavement that our nation began with as some of these veterans were ardent abolitionists and some were enslavers.

The particular details of these men's service and lives will help students contextualize the history of our nation from its very beginnings. The exhibit also includes research by Justin Wexler of Wild Hudson Valley on the effect of the Revolutionary War on the Stockbridge-Munsee tribe and research on women in the Revolutionary War. The workshop will engage teachers in how to use the resources in this exhibit in their Social Studies curriculum.

This exhibit and teacher workshop was made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and the Rheinstrom Foundation.

A light dinner will be available.
