For generations, graduation from a NYS high school has required earning course credits and passing Board of Regents exams. Beginning with the 2029-30 school year, this system will be replaced by Portrait of a Graduate (POG) requirements, a system that reflects a broader vision of what high school graduates should know and be able to do. This means that Regents exams will no longer be required for a diploma, and students will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in multiple ways. While the POG requirements will not be fully implemented until the 2029-30 school year, it is important to begin thinking about the potential impact the POG will have on arts education in NYS.
This fifteen-hour, asynchronous online course invites arts educators to explore what the POG asks of students and to imagine the role their instructional practices might play in supporting students as they work to achieve and demonstrate POG goals. Participants will become familiar with the framework and its requirements, and they will celebrate the distinctive ways in which dance, music, theater, and visual arts nurture the POG attributes. Through reflection and practical planning, participants will identify what they already do well and will consider thoughtful adjustments they might make to curriculum, instruction and assessment.
A central task of the course is building a bridge between classroom practice and the POG portfolio. Participants will be asked to select anonymous samples of current student work, post it to the course community, and reflect on how it aligns with POG requirements. Samples may come from any grade level, ranging from kindergarten artwork exploring shape and color to high school music performances or artwork reflecting sophisticated interpretive insights. Each participant will leave with a personalized action plan to align their instruction with POG goals.
