Achieve www.achieve.org Achieve was founded in part to help states align their academic standards and assessments with the expectations of college and careers. Achieve's guiding principle in K-12 standards has been to clearly define what students should know and be able to do throughout their K-12 experience, with the aim of all students graduating ready for college and careers. Much of Achieve's work has focused on English Language Arts and mathematics standards, most recently around the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Anchored in college and career readiness, the goal of a high quality assessment system is to signal whether students are on track to graduate ready for college and the workplace. The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness in College and Careers (PARCC), the ADP Assessment Consortium, and other assessment work is actively being studied within the parameters of the Common core Standards.

Literacy Design Collaborative (www.literacydesigncollaborative.org)
The Literacy Design Collaborative [LDC] is designed to make literacy instruction the foundation of the core subjects and allowteachers to build content on top of a coherent approach to literacy. The LDC created a literacy framework for the core secondary subject areas of ELA, social studies and science. Partners use the LDC framework as a common chassis to create LDC tasks, modules, and courses designed to teach students to meet common core literacy standards while also learning to meet content demands at high levels of performance.

It has expanded to become a larger initiative that involves an ever-growing set of partners, with teachers firmly leading the development. The project is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Student Learning Objective Exemplars from New York State Teachers are Now Available!

Four groups of teachers and administrators were trained by New York State Education Department staff to write a Student Learning Objective (SLO) for one of the classes they teach: three pilot districts were Allegany-Limestone Central School District, Ballston Spa Central Schools, and Niskayuna Central Schools; the fourth group consisted of teachers throughout the state who were nominated by Staff/Curriculum Development Network (S/CDN) representatives. Approximately 85 participating teachers were asked to think about how the learning content linked to the New York State or national standards. The teachers developed targets and then collected evidence for their baseline data. HEDI Criteria and scales were either developed at the District level or by the teacher in consultation with their building principal. These SLOs are used to prepare students for future growth and development, as well as college and career readiness.

Find exemplar SLO's at: http://engageny.org/resource/student-learning-objectives/

Do your students think their education matters? Do they have an opinion about their education? Do any of your students want to win a new iPad Mini?

Throughout the month of May,eScholar is sponsoring theMake My Education Matter contest. Students can enter by submitting a response online to the following questions:

Does your education matter to you? Why or why not?

Everyone in education strives to provide students the best education possible, but how often are students given an official outlet to voice their opinion? eScholar wants to give them that opportunity. As students craft their responses, here are some additional things they can think about:

-What do they want to be when they grow up?

-Do they see a connection between what they’re learning in school and what they want to do in the future?

-Do they wish there were more subjects or topics they could learn about?

-Do they have a goal that their education will help them achieve?

Contest entries will be judged in two categories: students between ages 8-12, students between ages 13-17. All responses must be submitted byMay 31, 2013. A winner will be selected from each category based on originality, clarity, thoughtfulness, and the overall quality of the writing. The winners will receive a brand newiPad Mini!Teachers, if you are interested in incorporating this into your classroom, eScholar has also createdstudent activity worksheetsto help students write their responses.
