*Caldecott Immersion Weekend at the Carey Conference Center*

Annually since 1939, the American Library Association has awarded the
Randolph Caldecott Medal and several honors to the most distinguished
picture books of the preceding year. In this workshop, teachers will learn
how to teach Common Core Learning Standards with these outstanding books
from the past, as well as participate in the mock selection of this year’s
potential winner.  Participants will follow an integrated learning process,
which they can replicate in part or in whole in their own classrooms, which
emphasizes close reading, as well as answering text and illustration based
questions and stating/writing opinions with text evidence. The workshop
includes the hands on exploration of artistic styles, the integrated use of
technology and the opportunity to explore some of the most outstanding
picture books in American publishing history. Teachers will also form a
“Mock” Caldecott Committee and apply their ability to persuade with
evidence as they consider some of the potential winners of this year’s
prize, to be awarded by the ALA on Monday February 2nd.

Participants should bring, from their own collections and from libraries,
the following:

   - Caldecott Medal and Caldecott Honor Books from the past
   - Any newly published picture books with a 2014 copyright
   - All books should be labelled inside with a sticky note bearing the
participant’s name and school (in case a return needs to be made.)

*2015 CARE Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education Immersion*

CARE for Teachers is a unique program designed to help teachers respond
more pro-actively in the classroom by promoting awareness, presence,
compassion, reflection, and inspiration - the inner resources they need to
help students flourish, socially, emotionally, and academically.

Based upon current research on the neuroscience of emotion, CARE introduces
skills that promote understanding, recognition and self-regulation.
CARE introduces
basic mindfulness activities such as short periods of silent reflection,
and progresses to more complex activities that demonstrate strategies for
addressing many of the challenging situations teachers often encounter.
Teachers learn to bring greater calm, mindfulness and awareness into the
classroom to enhance their relationships with their students, improve
classroom management, and facilitate curricular implementation.

This session is designed to reinforce the skills and strategies of
the CARE model for those who have begun to implement CARE strategies in
their practice. It will also serve to introduce the model to participants
not yet familiar with CARE*.*

We will review the core practice strategies, as well as discuss challenges
and successes experienced while implementing CARE. This interactive session
will provide a springboard from which participants may both develop and
refine CARE skills in their teaching.
