*Teaching with Poverty in
Mind*<https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=13206&I=1350906&H=1>
Almost 20% of America's students live in poverty. This means that over 10
million children from K-12 are affected by negative factors that often
limit their academic success. In order to reduce the impact of this
obstacle to student learning, teachers need to understand the impacts of
poverty on students and how this can be addressed within the classroom and
school community.

This workshop will give you background knowledge on understanding poverty
in new ways, along with research-based skills and practical applications
that facilitate academic success for the increasing number of our students
living in poverty.

Based on Eric Jensen's book, *Teaching with Poverty in Mind*, this workshop
will discuss the effects of poverty in our students' brains and how we as
educators can use this information to make our instruction more effective,
not only for students from poverty, but for all learners in our classrooms.

According to Jensen, Poverty has been analyzed and studied for years. The
results are that poverty changes the brain.

Here are six of the many ways:

·         Nutritional deficits

·         Emotional support

·         Stress/Distress

·         Health issues

·         Cognitive stimulation

·         Safety issues

In this workshop participants will learn:

·         How the brains of students from poverty are different.

·         Enrichment exercises that support positive changes in the brain.

·         Practical strategies you can use in the classroom that will
benefit all learners.

*Grades 4-8 Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice with Ratio,
Proportionality, Fractions and
Decimals*<https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=13206&I=1350917&H=1>

In this course, designed in collaboration with the Hudson-Mohawk Valley
Area Mathematics Association, teachers of grades 4-8 will investigate
effective and engaging teaching strategies that support some of the more
challenging aspects of the Common Core Math Shifts, specifically fluency
and deep understanding. By exploring strategies that develop students’
fluency with fractions and decimals, teachers will have new tools to
reinforce the essential problem-solving skills students need for deeper
learning, including flexibility, accuracy, and efficiency. In addition,
teachers will learn how to foster deep understanding of mathematical
concepts. This will be accomplished in the context of the fundamental
principles and relationships inherent in ratio and proportionality
problems. All activities presented will be directly applicable to classroom
practice and will include opportunities for differentiation.

*Introduction to SMART
Board<https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=13206&I=1350925&H=1>
*This course was designed to introduce teachers to SMART Notebook Software.
Participants will become comfortable using the tools on the toolbar,
building templates, layering and importing pictures and files. In addition,
participants will learn tips for building effective presentations that
promote student and teacher interaction.  Activities are applicable to all
subject areas, support the Common Core Learning Standards and include the
ability to incorporate assessments that support data driven instruction.

The first part of the course includes using and navigating the toolbar and
lesson activity toolkit. This will be followed by 20-30 minutes of activity
building with the instructor’s support. Participants will build sorting and
multiple-choice activities for students to complete individually for
assessment or in groups to provide independent practice.

The second half of the course will provide instruction on layering and
building presentations from scratch.  The instructor will model this and
show examples of ways to differentiate the activities for subject areas and
for student ability levels.  Participants will be given time to create
lessons to take home as well as access to multiple templates that can be
adjusted as needed. The instructor will be available for suggestions and
troubleshooting throughout.

Each participant will leave with at least one self-created lesson. In most
cases, these lessons can be easily modified to create additional lessons.

*Instructor: *Angela Halwick teaches second grade at Catskill Elementary
School.  She has been providing professional development on the SMART Board
to elementary teachers for two years. For teachers who have previously
taken her course the first half will be a refresher and the second half of
the course will be all new!
