because of our failure to engage them. Until we make school the best part
of every student's day, we will struggle with attendance, achievement, and

In this interactive, virtual book study participants will learn:

1) "smart, purposeful engagement strategies that all teachers can use to
expand students' cognitive capacity, increase motivation and effort, and
build deep, enduring understanding of content; 2) the (until now) unwritten
rules for engagement that are essential for increasing student achievement;
3) how automating engagement in the classroom can help teachers use
instructional time more effectively and empower students to take ownership
of their learning; 4) steps you can take to create an exciting yet
realistic implementation plan." Eric Jensen

As participants read each chapter, they will individually select and
implement strategies suggested in the text in their own classrooms, gather
data, reflect on their practice and discuss their experiences in a
supportive, on-line collegial environment. Participants should expect to
spend 1 hour, 40 minutes per week for 9 weeks documenting their
implementation efforts, with a choice of either the week of April 14-18 or
April 21-25 off.

*Ms. Valerie Lovelace* is a program specialist at the Greater Capital
Region Teacher Center, the largest New York State Teacher Center outside of
New York City. Valerie, a NYS permanently certified Pre -K- 6 teacher, has
been a professional developer for the past 13 years and has presented
numerous workshops and courses on the topic of poverty in education since
2009.

*Dr. Deborah Hoeft*is a retired Assistant Superintendent of Student
Learning for the Greece Central Schools. Currently, Deborah is an adjunct
professor for St. John Fisher College and an educational consultant.
Deborah has a Ed.D. for Teaching and Curriculum from the University of
Rochester and a MS in Education/Special Education from Slippery Rock
University. Her diverse experience included director of special education,
assistant principals and middle school and elementary school teacher.
